Alright guys we need to have a talk, potty training boys is not harder than potty training girls!
Now rule number one when it comes to potty training whether it’s a girl or a boy is to make sure they are ready. You are not potty training your child on your timeline, you’re potty training your child on his or her timeline and when your son is fully ready to be potty trained then you know, it’s not going to be hard. It will be easy, I promise you. Now, if you aren’t sure whether your child is ready or not, watch this video, but you need to be sure your child is fully ready for potty training.
So, I will add the disclaimer that yes, yes, boys will develop a little bit slower than girls; however, if you just wait until they’re ready then it’s not going to make a difference! A girl might be 2 years and 6 months when she’s potty training and maybe a boy is 2 years and 11 months, what’re a few more months of waiting? Just wait until your child is actually ready for this potty training journey.
Rule number one that I have for potty training boys that’s obviously different from potty training girls is that potty training them standing up should not be an option. Boys don’t know that there’s a difference between pee and poop, they just know that they pee and poop in their diaper, they don’t necessarily know that there’s going to be a big difference whether they sit or stand. So, just potty train them sitting down. Obviously, whether we are peeing or pooping our body is giving us different signals, so you either have a full bladder or you have poop that needs to come out. So, your child needs to learn the difference between both of those sensations so you might as well just teach them while they’re sitting down that they’re either peeing or pooping. Differentiate both of the things that your child is doing.
Not only for those reasons should you teach your child to pee while sitting down, but nine times out of ten little boys are not tall enough to reach over the toilet bowl with their penis to pee in the potty and you’re going to get pee all over the place so if you want to keep a cleaner bathroom, have them pee sitting down and on top of that when your boy is trying to pee standing up and you put the seat up for them, if that seat falls down on them, that is going to ruin things forever for your child. Because if they have an injury to their penis while potty training, not only are you going to be going back to diapers, but your child may remember that forever and they might be traumatized. With all of that being said, your son will stand to pee when he’s ready to and it should be his own choice.
Now this next thing about boys that I’m going to tell you about potty training, it irritates me, ok? It irritates me when boys just pee wherever they want. Just because boys can whip out a penis and pee on a tree, or in a bush, or in the woods, or wherever, does not mean that they should! If there is a toilet available, ok I get it if your backwoods camping, hiking, whatever and there is no toilet, go ahead, free the pee, go wherever you want. If you are in your backyard, go inside and use the toilet! Peeing anywhere is, well I just find it inappropriate, and if you’re teaching your son at around 2, 2 and a half, 3 years old that it’s ok to just pee wherever they are, you’re going to be in the middle of a family reunion your child is going to drop trou and your great aunt Karen’s backyard and start peeing everywhere and you are going to be highly embarrassed. So, if there is a toilet available, teach your son to go pee in that toilet. Now along the same lines as teaching your boy to pee sitting down, obviously this is going to be different with boys than it is with girls, boys need to learn aim whether they’re sitting or standing. But, especially when they’re sitting you need to teach your son to push his penis down. Otherwise, it will go everywhere and you don’t want that to happen! So, when you’re little boy is sitting on the toilet so “push your penis down”, it’s that simple. Four words, four, just tell your son when they sit on the toilet “push your penis down”
Now here’s another little bonus tip for you if you have boys – even if you teach them to pee sitting down, even if you teach them to push their penis down, they still might get a little sprinkle when they tinkle, teach them to wipe the seat, please! I have two boys, they are now 4 and 7, they are both now of age and size to pee standing up, when my 4-year-old pees standing up he does still get his pee on the seat, he has to clean the toilet!
