Newborn Essentials You NEED for Your Winter Baby!

Just like that, summer is over. It feels like forever ago when I was walking outside barefoot! It seems like here in Rochester, NY we go from summer straight to winter. And that means I bundle up in my winter jacket + gloves + sweaters + scarves + boots with the fur from October through April. If I feel like my limbs are going to freeze off, how do tiny newborns make it through these cold temperatures?! Luckily, there are some great products to keep your little bundle of joy all bundled up, while still keeping them safe!
Here are my top 10 ways to keep your baby warm throughout the cold winter months:
Keep your baby warm and covered from the elements, while preventing wind burn on their sensitive cheeks. This cover fits all standard car seats and easily fits right over it.
Keep a hat, gloves and socks on your baby all day, everyday. It’s a well-known fact that we lose heat quickly from our extremities. Keeping them covered up will help keep them warmer.
Although babies can’t wear puffy coats or snow suits in the car seat, it’s still a good idea to have a snow suit. You can take your baby out for brief walks outside or just out in your yard for a few brief minutes. The fresh air (in moderation during the winter) is good for babies and toddlers!
Keep your baby close and stay warm with body heat. There are SO many brands and different types of carriers. Test some out before you purchase one. With the varying styles of carrieres, there will be plenty to choose from.
Skin gets dry during the winter months. Use a good moisturizing cream, especially if you know your baby has sensitive skin.
You never know if your car is going to break down or if you run into an emergency. Always pack an emergency kit in your car. Load it up with car essentials like jumper cables and also baby supplies like extra clothes, blankets, formula, diapers and wipes.
Humidifier
keep the air moist in their bedroom as the winter months can be so dry.
Keep your baby cozy in his crib! Even adults love using some flannel bed sheets in the winter time, so don’t be afraid to splurge for the whole family on this one!
Having a thermostat in the baby’s room will help you figure out if your baby is feeling too hot or too cold. The recommended temperature is between 68-72 degrees.
I love the option of being able to cover up little hands while they’re asleep. Not only will this prevent scratches on the baby’s face, but they’ll keep them warmer as well. Here are some great sleep sack products:

Rule of thumb: Keep your baby in one more layer than you are comfortable wearing.
Never leave loose blankets in your baby’s crib. The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends no lovie in the crib until 12 months, no blanket in the crib until your baby is 18 months old and no pillow until the baby is at least 2 years old.

Some things to think about when deciding when you want to start sleep training your baby/toddler:
    • Ensure it’s the proper timing- make sure your baby isn’t sick, you aren’t traveling, or you don’t have any big life changes coming (new baby, moving, switching jobs/childcare, etc.).
    • Be prepared to put in the work. Consistency will pay off in the long run. Sleep training isn’t overnight success; it takes many nights and dedication to help your baby learn to sleep.
    • Create a plan, or invest in a sleep consultant. If you choose to work with me, I will assess your baby’s sleep habits and write a customized step by step sleep plan for your baby. No two plans are the same, just as no two babies are the same. My sleep plans are based on your child’s temperament, age, parental preference and so much more! My sleep packages also come with unlimited support for the duration of your purchase- you can ask me anything and share every triumph and victory!
