INFANT DAY VS. NIGHT CONFUSION: How to help your baby correct their days and nights
When babies are born, they naturally have their days and nights confused, but it can be very exhausting for parents. If this sounds like your situation right now, keep reading and go watch my video below.
INFANT DAY VS. NIGHT CONFUSION: How to help your baby correct their days and nights
When you were pregnant with your baby, your actual daily movements were lulling your baby to sleep. But as soon as you lay down and your head hits that pillow, your baby’s awake and it’s party time. So how are we going to help fix this day versus night confusion? Your baby does not have a circadian rhythm. It takes about eight weeks for your baby to develop their circadian rhythm.
How you can help your baby learn day vs night:
- You have to respect the wake windows, newborn wake windows are only about 45 minutes for the first month of your baby’s life. So as your baby is getting used to the world, they’re really not awake for very long stretches of time in between sleeping but making sure that they’re not getting overtired is going to help their body develop further.
- Making sure that you’re waking your baby every two hours at naps. You never want your baby at any point really to sleep longer than a two hour stretch. Especially because you want your baby to sleep these longer stretches at night and during the day you need to wake them up at two hours because you need to feed them.
- In the morning when you wake up your baby, you want to have a big morning routine. You want to say good morning to your baby as soon as it is time to wake up, open the curtains, get some light in there, turn on some calming music. And you want all feedings to be out of the bedroom, completely different from your overnight feedings.
- Having a bedtime routine. You get into the nursery, you’re giving your baby that last feeding, which this one can be in the nursery right before bed because you want your baby’s body to trigger the production, knowing that this is a different feeding than the rest of the day, but you may want to keep them in their diaper for this feeding. You want consistent white noise for the entire duration of your baby’s sleep. You don’t want any light in the room whatsoever.
