“My baby wakes up every 2 hours!” Or even worse, “My baby wakes up every time I put her down!” Some parents have resorted to sleeping on an air mattress in their child’s room or moving recliners and couches into the baby’s room, or just snoozing on the baby’s floor! Either way, this sounds exhausting and you and your baby deserve unfragmented sleep so you can actually wake up refreshed and well-rested.
If this is happening to you, keep reading to learn some tips to help your baby sleep longer stretches through the night.
There are many reasons why babies wake frequently throughout the night. Depending on their age, some of these reasons could be:
Sleep regressions
Mental and physical milestones
Teething
Sickness
Negative sleep prop associations
The inability to transition from one sleep cycle to the next independently
Here are some tips to help your baby sleep longer stretches at night:
Ensure an age-appropriate daytime schedule. Sleep promotes sleep so proper daytime naps will encourage better sleep during the night.
Establish a strong and consistent bedtime routine. Children thrive on consistency, a predictable bedtime routine will help your child understand the process at bedtime and increase the likelihood of a smoother bedtime.
Put your baby down drowsy, but awake. Your baby needs to fall asleep in the same place s/he will wake up.
Teach your baby to self-soothe. Having the ability to self-soothe means that your child will be able to repeat the self-soothing process throughout the night, resulting in better sleep for the whole family.
If you need help working towards longer stretches of sleep, let’s set up a time to chat! Some things to think about when deciding when you want to start sleep training your baby/toddler:
Ensure it’s the proper timing- make sure your baby isn’t sick, you aren’t traveling, or you don’t have any big life changes coming (new baby, moving, switching jobs/childcare, etc.).
Be prepared to put in the work. Consistency will pay off in the long run. Sleep training isn’t overnight success; it takes many nights and dedication to help your baby learn to sleep.
