10 MISTAKES TO AVOID WHILE POTTY TRAINING | Things you shouldn’t do when potty training your toddler

In a perfect world. Every parent would buy my potty training course before starting potty training, but I guess the world is not perfect. Right? So I’m gonna tell you the top 10 mistakes that you should avoid while potty training.

10 MISTAKES TO AVOID WHILE POTTY TRAINING | Things you shouldn’t do when potty training your toddler

Mistake 1: Do not post on social media before or during potty training.  You are going to get 75,000 different opinions and different people telling you what to do. It’s unnecessary and it’s just going to add stress.

Mistake 2: Giving your child nagging reminders every 10 to 30 minutes to sit on the potty.

Mistake 3: Parents sometimes want to be in control, but this is not about you, this is about your child. They need to learn their body cues and what the urge to pee feels like or poop. Your job here is to be your child’s cheerleader and to encourage them that they’re doing a great job.

Mistake 4: Bribery versus rewards. Whatever encourages your child and really motivates them, then that’s what you should be using for rewards, not bribery.

Mistake 5: Asking your child if they want to go on the potty. It’s not a question, when it’s time to go potty, let’s go. Or it’s time to go potty. Do you want to use the one downstairs or upstairs? You’re giving your child the choice of which one they want to use? But you’re not asking them if they want to go because if it’s time to go, it’s time to go.

If you’ve gotten this far, then I want to tell you about my free potty training guide. In this guide I’m sharing tips with you on how to have a successful journey with potty training. It’s FREE, so go get it!

Mistake 6: Getting emotional. Accidents are going to happen, and if you’re getting emotional about these accidents, it’s not going to help anyone. It’s going to keep you stressed out, and it’s going to stress out your child and it’s probably going to cause more accidents; the more stressed out your child feels, they’re going to feel in less control of their body.

Mistake 7: Putting a diaper on at naptime. They are going to hold their pee and their poop until they know it’s nap time and they’re going to release everything in their diaper, and they’re not going to learn how to go to the bathroom. Generally two hours or less and your child should be able to hold their pee.

Mistake 8: Potty training with pull ups. When you’re potty training, ditch the diapers!

Mistake 9: Punishing accidents.  Never ever, ever tell your child that they are bad or naughty if they have an accident, this is going to kill their self esteem. When they do have these accidents, make sure that you’re just transactional about it. (Check out my video linked above to learn more).

Mistake 10: Camping out on a small potty in front of the television all day long. Your child is zoning out on the tv and they’re not thinking about their bodily urges, and you really shouldn’t have your child sitting on the toilet for more than five minutes at a time.
