Tips for potty training GIRLS!

Potty Training Girls: Problems & Tips!

Do you think that it’s harder to potty train boys than girls? Well, in this article, we are going to talk about all the problems you can run into specifically with girls.

Is Your Child Ready?

All kids are actually easy to potty train. You just need to wait until your child is ready. Make sure you see all the signs of readiness for potty training in your child so that you’re not wasting your time and making it harder on yourself. If you’re not sure if your child is ready or not, then click the link here and take a short quiz to find out.

Now, this post is all about potty training girls. If your daughter is not ready for potty training, then it’s not going to go well. You might say, “it’s not really going as I expected”. Well, this isn’t your process. It’s your child’s process. You need to make sure that she is ready before jumping into potty training.

Make Sure She Wipes Properly

One of the most common problems parents might run into is painful rashes. When girls are not wiping properly, they are subjected to a lot more rashes in the vagina area. And, as difficult as it might be to talk about this and think about your daughter being in that kind of pain in her privates, it’s so important to talk about girls who either aren’t wiping at all or aren’t wiping properly, as they are going to be more subjected to infections, rashes, and a lot of discomforts.

The truth is, a lot of the time, small girls aren’t wiping at all. They think that they’re just going to, like, “drip dry”. Do not let your daughters do that because it’s going to breed infection and bacteria! When potty-training your daughter, you must always teach her how to wipe properly. Always wipe from front to back. Even before potty training – so when you are still changing your child’s diaper, you can already start teaching them by saying things like, “now mommy (or daddy) is wiping you from front to back”.

Girls are also more subject to getting urinary tract infections (UTI) than boys. This can be for a number of reasons, but it is definitely important to seek out medical advice. If you think your daughter is getting a UTI or has a UTI, then this is one of the only times that I say, yes, it’s okay to completely stop potty training and go back to diapers, and revisit in a month or two. It is important to make sure that your child is in the best health condition possible before you start potty training.

Potty Cues

The next thing that we are going to talk about is potty cues. Sometimes, it is harder to tell their potty cues than boys. Obviously, a boy’s genital is on the outside. So you can kind of start to see the pee dribbling and needing to come out. But with girls, their genitalia are on the inside so it’s much harder to catch their pee. In fact, most of the time, we are catching a mid-pee accident.

So, when you are beginning to potty train, you want to keep a very close eye on your daughter and her potty cues, things like how she starts wiggling a little bit in her seat, squeezing her legs, or holding themselves. Obviously, every child is different. Take note as to how often your child is having accidents and prompt them to go to the bathroom before it happens.

I can honestly say from my personal experience that my daughter was harder to potty train than my sons. She decided when she wanted to start her potty training, but I wasn’t ready because I had a one-month-old! So that was an experience in itself. I hope this article is helpful. Don’t hesitate to comment and share your experience, or contact me if you have any questions. Keep blooming!
